International Day Festival

Each spring, Fairmont Elementary celebrates one of our most meaningful and memorable traditions: the International Day Festival. This schoolwide celebration brings students, staff, families, and community members together to honor the many cultures, countries, languages, and traditions represented throughout our Fairmont family.

During International Day, classrooms are transformed into countries from around the world. Students “travel” from room to room using passports, where they participate in hands-on learning activities, explore cultural displays, listen to music, view artwork, and learn about the geography, history, traditions, and daily life of people across the globe. These experiences help students build curiosity, respect, and appreciation for cultures beyond their own.

The day begins with excitement and school pride during our Parade of Nations. Students create parade floats to represent their classroom countries and proudly share their learning with the school community. The parade gives students a chance to celebrate what they have discovered while also experiencing the joy of seeing many cultures represented together in one shared space.

Another favorite part of the celebration is our International Food Fair. Families from all over the world prepare recipes and foods from their home countries so students and staff can taste, experience, and learn from the flavors of different cultures. For many students, this is a chance to try something new. For others, it is a chance to see their own family traditions celebrated and shared with their classmates. The Food Fair helps students understand that food is more than something we eat — it is connected to family, heritage, memory, celebration, and community.

Families play an essential role in making International Day special. Parents and relatives share recipes, clothing, music, art, stories, artifacts, traditions, and personal experiences from their native countries and family backgrounds. Their participation helps bring the learning to life and gives students a deeper understanding of the people and cultures that make up our school community.

International Day is more than a festival. It is a celebration of belonging. It reminds our Cardinals that every culture has something valuable to teach us, every family has a story worth sharing, and our diversity makes Fairmont stronger. Through this special day, students learn that the world is wide, beautiful, and connected — and that Fairmont is proud to be a place where all cultures are welcomed and celebrated.
